The special features included are the trailers and an interview with Fred Williamson and Jim Kelly on "Take a Hard Ride" menu, both movies are also on a single disk and it's not double sided. Overall, this is a great DVD and I would recommend it, especially to Western fans.

I'm giving this five stars sight unseen simply because RIO CONCHOS is finally getting a dvd release! This is one of the best 1960's Westerns and one of my all-time favorites. Richard Boone shines in one of his classic roles, stealing every scene he's in, rivaling his KREMLIN LETTER and NIGHT OF THE FOLLOWING DAY performances. Simply great two-fisted action for the Western fan as Boone, Whitman, Fanciosa and Jim Brown ( in his first movie role ) take on Edmond O'Brien's gun-running empire. RIO CONCHOS would make an outstanding double bill with John Wayne's THE COMMANCHEROS, which is pretty much the same film ( done earlier ), and I can't wait to watch them both on a lazy summer afternoon as an excuse to get out of yard work.
The second feature on this disc is another Jim Brown Western, teaming Brown up with Spaghetti pro Lee Van Cleef under the direction of Antonio Margheriti. This one, from 1975, is somewhat offbeat as Westerns were looking for something a little different ( yet the same ) to keep the genre alive, and though it's enjoyable it just isn't in the same class as pre-1970 Westerns like RIO CONCHOS.
So strap on the ol' sixshooter, fill the canteen and ride the trail down to the RIO CONCHOS. When you get there you'll be humming the Jerry Goldsmith theme for days!

Rio Bravo was a movie I had seen multiple times as a pre teen; and even at that young age wondered why all involved in the production were compelled to allow Dean Martin and teen heartthrob Ricky Nelson sing a duet together (somewhat confusingly ‘Bravo’ was remade by Howard Hawks himself 8 years later in 1967 as El Dorado with a young James Caan in the Ricky Nelson role).
Hawks would then helm another ‘Rio’ movie Rio Lobo in 1970. John Ford had directed yet another Rio movie titled Rio Grande back in 1950; and for the longest time I had recalled another movie with Rio as part of the title that—for some reason—I had only seen once before the days of cable television. In hindsight it might have been shown less because The Duke wasn’t in it. The movie in question was Rio Conchos.
If I’m not embellishing here, I believe I have heard/read John Wayne turned down Rio Conchos because of another movie he’d made called Comancheros (1961, last film by Director Michael Curtis) that had a very similar selling guns to Indians storyline as Rio Conchos.

    So,
Gordon Douglass—who appears to have had a rather hit and miss directing career—directed Rio Conchos; and the classic 1954, surprisingly still good nuclear weapon cautionary tale, monsters flick Them. The monstrous ants movie excelled in lots of desert footage as does/did Douglass’ solid 1964 western Rio Conchos (sans Wayne) which is the main reason I purchased this Jim Brown(?) double feature.
Stuart Whitman also stars (Comancheros with John Wayne) alongside a good ham it up (when boozing—his personality is very impulsive) performance by Richard Boone. Boone’s character is on a revenge vendetta his wife and kid murdered by Apache Indians.
Jim Brown is a soldier and friend to Stuart Whitman who head to Mexico to find guns stolen from the military.
Brown’s performance is fairly simple and soft spoken. But, when the action goes down Jim is all in.
Edmund O’Brien (D.O.A, The Wild Bunch) continues to impress with his transition from older movies to what became a solid character acting career in the 60’s et cetera. He is a southern confederate officer who is too aware of the day General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox.
Anthony Franciosa is memorable as halfbreed Rodriguez who also ends up on the road to Mexico to buy guns or get rich or…just do what it takes to survive.
Wende Wagner is better and more believable as an Indian than I thought she’d be although she is fairly obviously(?) not of Indian descent.
Great colors in a bar brothel scene that reminds me (like opening colorful credits) that Rio Conchos was made for 3D(?). Sure looks like it, though, with occasional objects jutting toward/at screen.
A unique Character actor, indeed, Timothy Carey makes an effective appearance as the bartender at the brothel.

The other Jim Brown movie is Take A Hard Ride (1975) which also contains some good (spaghetti western style) visuals and sometimes comes across quite realistic; and then is soon to be hindered by some terrible logistics when Fred Williamson pops up to help Jim out of a jam—and why can’t the ‘bad guys’ see him but Jim does?
Anyways, Lee Van Cleef is well cast for/by the Italian director who went by American name Anthony M Dawson. Dawson didn’t make many truly good movies with sword and sandal and Hercules (Steve Reeves😟) movies under his occasional six shooter belt.
Fred Williamson (Black Caesar) probably gives his most (slick gambler) charismatic performance, ever, in Take a Hard Ride.
Christine Spaak is along for the trek and may deserve praise and comparisons to Claudia Cardinale’s classic appearance/performance in Once Upon A Time in The West (love the Sergio Leone movie more than The Hard Ride).
Anyways, this twin bill is worth the time. I spent 14$. My double feature DVD did need to be put in After another DVD despite not being a ‘burned’ disc. It does then work flawlessly.

Rio Conchos was just as good on a second viewing (about 2 weeks apart).
I did watch two extras with Williamson and Jim Kelley from Take A Hard Ride. Fred The Hammer (ex hard hitting football player) does seem to have an ego. King fu specialist Kelly is not short of bravado either.
Overall, 4 stars because of Rio Conchos.

Along the way they encounter bad guys, bad Indians, and pick up a Native American Girl and even a baby..Richard Boone is listed as the main star but Stuart Whitman really stands out as a yankee captain..Tony Franciosa provides the comedy of sorts and Jim Brown is outstanding in his first movie...One thing I must say, the cinematography is studding with shots of the famous places in the west! Every scene is like a picture..And this version is in widescreen which makes the visas so much more beautiful..Rio Conchos is a very enjoyable movie...( Take the Hard Ride, which also had Jim Brown in it, is totally forgetable)

Rio Conchos. All critics reckon this is a remake of John Waynes The Searches> Cant see it myself think Rio Conchos stands alone as one of the great westerns of the sixties. Lovely crisp picture and sound. Boone, Whitman and Brown are all great in their roles but the picture is stolen by mute indian girl on there quest. Great film and worth seeing over and over again.Take a Hard Ride is full of ageing western stars Dana Andrews,Barry Sullivan ,Lee van Cleef to name just a few> It really is spot the 50s bit players. Nevertheless it is a solid B western. Girl gets killed halfway through which I thought was great, as women always seem to slow westerns down.
