Technical Updates: May 16, 2025

Image for: Technical Updates: May 16, 2025

Hey hey, here we are again! Normally this would've been the last tech blog of May, as there tend to be two per month, but hey, May surprises us with three tech blogs this year! If you read this while thinking "What is a tech blog", I got you. The Technical Updates are a blog series we release every two weeks, containing an update of relevant platform changes, products released by specific product themes, an overview of experiments that may be relevant to note, and a selection of user-facing bug tickets that got fixed (or that we're working on fixing). In addition to providing you with these insights, the comment section is also a good place for you to ask questions, give feedback on your experience, or report bugs you may have encountered …

Off-Platform with Fandom: 20th Anniversary Roundtable (Disney, Power Rangers, Harry Potter & Lord of the Rings)

Welcome to "Off-Platform with Fandom", a segment where users on the Fandom platform come together to have a conversation off the platform. I’m Miller, a Community Manager for Entertainment with Fandom and we’re here on Community Central, the central community hub of the Fandom platform to bring you an off-platform conversation.

As you know, Fandom hosts some of today's biggest wikis with today's biggest and hottest IPs. And these IPs that are discussed within this roundtable need no introduction as they've been around for years. I myself have been a fan of most of these IPs since I was little kid.

How often do you find yourself diving deep on an exploration when visiting different worlds on the Fandom platform? Well, if you're anything like our …

Eyo, my lovely people. It's gonna be may! If you know, you know, and you're welcome to now have that song on repeat in your head. If you don't know, no worries, it's an age thing. Either way, welcome to our first tech blog of May! Every two weeks, the Technical Updates blog takes you through a selection of user-facing bugs that got fixed, potential experiments that are running, or things that changed on the platform. Other than (hopefully) serving as a source of information to you, you can also use the comment section to ask questions, give constructive feedback, and report any bugs you may have encountered.

New accessibility resources and community initiatives

Image for: New accessibility resources and community initiatives

Hey folks! At Fandom, it’s an important mission for us to help your wikis grow and be safe spaces for all users. A significant part of that is promoting web accessibility across the platform. In case you don’t know what this means (which is totally fine!), this is making sure your wiki content can be consumed by more readers, regardless of disability. I recently held a roundtable with the Fandom Stars to discuss the importance of web accessibility, which happens to be a close topic to my heart too. They provided some super helpful feedback on what Fandom can do to help wikis foster accessible best practices. With that in mind, I have some recent developments I’d like to share!

Accessible best practice has always been high in our minds at Fand…

Introducing the Admin Code of Conduct

Hello all!

It has been a while since I last posted here - I hope you have all been well!

As part of my work here at Fandom, I have spent the past few months looking deep into our platform policies & guidelines. (Hint: we have a lot!) I have been looking at what we cover, what we don’t cover, & how we can protect users from bad actors & bad experiences.

One point we needed more coverage on was our expectations toward wiki admins. We have (checks list) blogs, guidelines, Discord interactions, etc. - Fandom’s expectations of users who hold admin rights on a wiki (or multiple wikis) are wildly all over the place.

The Trust & Safety team has been working to try to solve this tangle, & we are taking our first step by releasing a new policy called th…

Celebrating Trans Day of Visibility 2025

Image for: Celebrating Trans Day of Visibility 2025
“We have to do it because we can no longer stay invisible. We have to be visible. We should not be ashamed of who we are. We have to show the world that we are numerous. There are many of us out there.” - Sylvia Rivera
Sylvia Rivera was a transgender rights activist who was also a noted community worker in New York.

Happy Trans Day of Visibility, everyone!

March 31st is Transgender Day of Visibility, or TDOV for short. Let's recognize the contributions and celebrate the lives of trans people around the world. Trans people have always existed and come from places all over the world. They are of every race and color, every religion and nationality. We all have loved ones in our lives that are special to us. Regardless of who we are, we are all …
