Removing "old" threads

I don't think it's a good idea to remove threads where no one has answered. Here https://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Support&oldid=prev&diff=12926051 is my thread and I was waiting for a response, but the bot knows better. @Elwinlhq: Sure! What is the language's autonym? The Spanish Wikipedia says "Punu qhichwa simi" – is that correct? Also, what should be the fallback/assistant languages for this language here in Translatewiki? @Jon Harald Søby: Thanks for the quick reply. It is right to say "Punu qhichwa simi", however it mainly corresponds to the geographic place and the macro language, which makes the name redundand. Nowadays, we tend not to use references to clarify the satements, For example:

• "Kastillanupi" (in spanish) intead of "kastilla simipi" (in spanish language)
• "Facebookpi" (on Facebook) instead of "Facebook nisqapi" (on the knwon as Facebook)

Therefore, we do not use anymore Qhichwa simi, we just say "Punu" or "Punu simi" and I would say just "Punu". About the assitant languages, I would appreciate to have Quechua, English, Spanish, and the other Quechua languages. Thanks! Elwinlhq (talk) 08:30, 7 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

There's also the Punu language spoken in Western Africa (code puu). As far as I now, we have never received a request to enable it, but we may receive it some day, so writing just "Punu" is not great.

@Amire80: I see, well in that case "Punu qhichwa" should be ok. Some consideration to the name:

• The Puno region is populated for various language speakers, like Aymaras, Quechuas, Uros, and more and "Punu simi" would lead to confusion if we assume that it is the only language in the Puno area, although from a Quechua perspective it is right to call it "Punu".
• There are also cases where language autonyms are "adopted" based on the region/delimitations where the are settled. (I do not want to make a discussion about it).

How to translate translatewiki.net?

I have searched and searched, and even asked ChatGPT, but I simply cannot find where to translate the user interface of translatewiki.net itself. Does anybody know where to do that? jhertel (talk) 17:19, 7 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It's not documented perfectly well, and it should be in the FAQ. (Or maybe it already is in the FAQ, but it's hard to find it because the word "translate" appears there so many times...)

Basically, translating all the components of the Translate extension (core user interface, page translation, search) as well as the "Translatewiki.net" project is supposed to localize most of translatewiki.net (the links point to translation into Danish, which is your main language if I understand correctly).

Translating other extensions that are used on translatewiki.net is necessary, too, such as Babel, ULS, and everything else on Special:Version.

Finally, there are some templates and documentation pages that can and should be translated, although I don't have a well-organized list.

We should probably organize it better. If you see something that should be translated, but isn't translated yet, please just bring it up here and we'll try to document it.

Your links did lead me to some of the places I have tried, but where I couldn't find the strings I was specifically looking for. And I still can't find them. To be more specific, when translating MediaWiki, I stumbled over two specific Danish strings in the interface which are grammatically incorrect. I tried and tried to search for these messages but to no avail. Maybe I should have been more specific about which strings to begin with, but I just thought I was searching in all the wrong places and simply needed to be shown the right place. 🙂

The two specific sentences in Danish (yes, you guessed the language right) are "[redigere denne liste]" and "[udvide disse beskeder]", and they appear for instance at https://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Special:Translate&showMessage=block-view-target&group=core&language=da&filter=&optional=1&action=translate to the right of the text box. The corresponding texts in English would be something like "[edit these messages]" and "[expand these messages]", although I don't know the exact English wording used, as those are just back translations.

Yes, I found these.

TLDR: You can translate them nicely in the translatewiki.net interface templates aggregate message group.

In more detail, they were in {{Template:Identical}}, which was kind of translated, but there were two problems with how it was done:

1. It was not translatable using the real translation system, but using wikitext tricks, which were hard to read and maintain. It was understandable back then, when the real translation system didn't work well with templates, but now it works much better, so it should be used in templates now. Some templates still use the old messy wikitext, and we replace it gradually.
2. A lot of the translations, including Danish, were written by a user who doesn't actually know the language, which is why I just deleted them now. (I'll restore a few that are likely good, but the rest should be written by people who know the languages.)

@Amire80: I tried to translate the template, but then I realized that 3 out of the 4 messages are redundant with those in Template:Related. It’s about duplicating when the same word describes two concepts. “[collapse these messages]” over a list of messages and “[collapse these messages]” over a list of messages are the same concept. Translatewiki.net is an installation of MediaWiki (source code at https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki), with most of the functionality provided by the Translate extension (source code at https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki-extensions-translate). Various configuration and infrastructural stuff is stored in a custom translatewiki repo (https://github.com/wikimedia/translatewiki). See more details about how the site is set up at Special:Version. While like any wiki disputes should in theory be decided by consensus, the small and largely closed group of Special:ListUsers/sysop has to manually approve each user and has the ultimate authority to resolve any conduct dispute that require things like blocking users or revoking their translator rights. in practice there tends to not be that much disagreement and mostly people just translate in peace without requiring a formal governance structure. Exceeded Rate Limit

Hi, I recently joined as a translator, but I am only able to translate on average 8 items before receiving a message which reads "Errore durante la pubblicazione della traduzione: You've exceeded your rate limit. Please wait some time and try again."

I have to wait around an hour before I'm able to translate again once this appears.

According the commit message, the rate limit wasn’t actually reduced – simply the software stopped counting each translation twice towards the rate limit, and the setting was changed to compensate for this, so that the effective rate limit remained 16 edits per hour.

The rate limit applies until one becomes “autoconfirmed”, which happens four days after registration (not after promotion to translator). Your four days have passed in the meantime, so now you can translate as many as you wish. (You couldn’t have changed any setting to skip this waiting, since it’s a security measure, allowing admins to block one before they cause too much harm if they turn out to be a vandal.) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 09:39, 25 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Request to enable Antiguan and Barbudan Creole (aig)

I would like to request the addition of Antiguan and Barbudan Creole. There is currently an incubator project for Wikipedia in the language, which is the majority native language in two or three countries and two territories. In order for our project to graduate from the incubator, a translated interface is required. Antiguan and Barbudan Creole meets all the defined standards for inclusion:

• Antiguan and Barbudan Creole (aig) is included in the latest standard issued by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO 639-3)
• Antiguan and Barbudan Creole (aig) can be written using Unicode (left to right).
• Antiguan and Barbudan Creole has 4+ active editors working on the Wikipedia incubator.
• Antiguan and Barbudan Creole is a living language and a general purpose language. The name of the language in Antiguan and Barbudan Creole is Aanteegan an' Baabyuudan (apostrophe is preferred but can be omitted if not supported). This is the link to the incubator page on Wikipedia. The language has a regulatory body and a standardised orthography which is being utilised for the purposes of the project. The assistant language should be English.

Aanteegan an' Baabyuudan (/a:nti:gən anʲ ba:byu:dən/) is the way it is spelled in standard orthography. This is the way the encyclopedia is being written in and can be seen in two dictionaries, "Antigua and Barbuda Dictionary" by Jerene Joseph and "The Way We Talk and other Antigua and Barbuda Folkways" by Joy Lawrence. Antiguan and Barbudan Creole would be the preferred name of the language as that is what we are currently using as the project name and is the literal translation of the endonym used among all dialects. I have a couple of questions about the name of the language:

1. On the Ethnologue site, the name is spelled as "Дулҕан‎". What is the right spelling — Долган or Дулҕан‎? Do you have examples of either?
2. Does the word "тыла" have to appear when the language is shown in a list of languages? If I understand correctly, it means "language". This word is not used in names of most other Turkic languages, although it does appear in the name of Sakha (саха тыла) and Altay (алтай тил). If it's unnecessary, it's probably better not to use it, but if it's important, it can be added.

How to view the most recent translations of a tool?

I have a tool Translating:Convenient Discussions. How do I see the most recent translation edits of it

• in a certain language;
• in general?

I know two ways. First is the list of recently changed entries:

• all languages: link
• one language, for example Japanese: link.

The disadvantage is that it doesn't show recent changes, only recently changed pages, so you have to do some clicking to see the change.

The second way I know is more accurate, but requires more manual work.

You have to create pages with links to all messages, for example, on your user subpage User:Jack who built the house/Convenient_Discussions

• Wikimedia:Convenient-discussions-ewsd-close-confirm-no/en
• Wikimedia:Convenient-discussions-cf-cancel/en
• Wikimedia:Convenient-discussions-sd-close-confirm-no/en
• ...

Change of 'Main Page' message in the Gothic translation

Hello, I'd like to ask if it's possible to change the message for 'Main Page' in the Gothic language translation of TranslateWiki into 𐌻𐌰𐌿𐍆𐍃 𐌰𐌽𐌰𐍃𐍄𐍉𐌳𐌴𐌹𐌽𐌰𐌹𐍃 instead of the current 𐌰𐌽𐌰𐍃𐍄𐍉𐌳𐌴𐌹𐌽𐌹𐌻𐌰𐌿𐍆𐍃. The current translation was added several years ago, but consists of a three-word compound, grammatically it's better to separate it into two words instead like this suggestion so that it adheres better to the writing conventions of the Gothic language. @Gothicspeaker: We can change it, yes, but since there are existing Wikimedia projects in this language, we would like to see a discussion where the change is supported in the Gothic Wikipedia.
