The Women's Retirement Initiative is a continuing effort to raise the profile of critical issues relating to pensions and retirement savings, particularly with respect to women.
A project of the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation, the Initiative is an outgrowth of the 1995 publication of Pensions in Crisis. This book, which was supported by the foundation, examined the fragile state of America's pension system. The Initiative was created to extend that investigation and examine how the dynamics of our pension and retirement system contribute to the disproportionate rate of poverty among older women. The Initiative began its work with a series of conferences intended to educate women about the importance of saving for retirement, and of understanding their retirement needs and benefits. In 1996, the foundation facilitated even greater public awareness of these issues by creating the Women's Institute for a Secure Retirement (WISER). In April 1998, the foundation and WISER co-authored a simple guide — What Every Woman Needs to Know About Money And Retirement. This guide was distributed as a pamphlet insert to the 26 million readers of Good Housekeeping magazine. Also in April 1998, the foundation and SunAmerica, a leading financial services company, released the findings of the most comprehensive survey ever conducted to date on women's planning for retirement.
