Stanford, Calif. - Kerri Walsh and Logan Tom have been added to the USA Women's National Volleyball Training Team in an announcement made by USA Volleyball. Walsh and Tom were teammates on the 1999 Stanford women's volleyball squad that reached the NCAA championship match.
"I'm very happy for both of them," stated Stanford head coach Don Shaw following the selection of the players. "It's an opportunity that many players dream of but don't actually get the chance to achieve."
Walsh finished her collegiate eligibility at Stanford in 1999, capping off an incredible four-year collegiate career by winning the AVCA's National Co-Player of the Year honor in her senior season. Walsh led Stanford to consecutive NCAA titles in her first two campaigns on the Farm and took the Cardinal back to the national championship game as a senior. During the Walsh era, Stanford posted a 122-11 (.917) overall record as the Cardinal won four Pac-10 titles and reached the NCAA Final Four three times. She became just the second player in the history of collegiate volleyball to earn AVCA All-America honors four times. She was also selected the Pac-10 Player of the Year in 1998 and 1999, as well as the conference's Freshman of the Year in 1996. She completed her career among Stanford's all-time leaders in digs (3rd), blocks (4th) and kills (5th).
"I'm really excited about this opportunity," stated Walsh. "I feel that playing at Stanford has helped prepare me for this. Stanford has a great coaching staff that taught me a lot about intensity and having a strong drive during my time there. I know what it takes to win because of my experience at Stanford."
Tom blasted onto the collegiate volleyball scene as a rookie with the Cardinal in 1999, winning Pacific-10 and AVCA District 8 Freshman of the Year honors. She was also the only freshman in the conference on the first team all-Pacific 10 squad. Tom led the Cardinal in kills (4.63 kpg) and service aces (0.45 sapg) in 1999. She already has experience as a member of the 1999 USA Women's Junior National Team that competed at the World Championship.
"It's nice for Kerri to get this opportunity. I think she has a lot to offer the national team, and I hope it works out for her," added Shaw. "As for Logan, this would be another great experience for her to play at this level. Her experience would definitely help the Stanford volleyball program in the long run."
Tom would return to the Stanford volleyball team in early-October of 2000 if she makes the final round of the national team's cuts prior to the 2000 Summer Olympics. Other players who were recently added to the training team are Nancy Meendering (Nebraska) and Heather Bown (Hawaii).
The USA Women's National Team will reduce its roster to 11 players prior to the 2000 Olympic Games, which will be held in Sydney beginning September of 1999.
