Thanks to the sleuthing of Justin McKinney of the SABR Biographical Research Committee, a 'new' major league baseball player has been discovered. Previously, Joe Miller was listed as playing for (and managing) the Washington Nationals in 1872. This Miller later played with Keokuk and Chicago in 1875. McKinney's research determined that the Miller who played for the 1872 Washington club was actually William Miller, though. Furthermore, Joe Miller was not the manager. The manager was actually Bill Lennon, the team's catcher. The Bio Committee is still searching for more details on William Miller (like when and where he was born and died, his batting/throwing handedness, height/weight, etc).
Thank you to our friends at SABR for uncovering and sharing this discovery!

This June, FBref will be shutting down the Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and German versions of our website. The English language version of FBref will be unaffected by these changes and will be the default for all users.
We've made the decision to remove the foreign language versions of FBref, as these websites require a great deal of resources to maintain, and have not driven significant additional revenue. Additionally, free translation services have reached the point that a majority of our users will still be able to translate the English-language version of FBref into whatever language they need.
The changes will be taking effect in early-to-mid June. We'll have more information on the exact timetable as we get closer. For our foreign language users, merci, gracias, danke, grazie, and obrigada for your support of our site. If you have any questions about these changes, feel free to reach out to our customer support team.

After many years of searching, we are pleased to announce that we have tracked down our white whale, of sorts: the 1980 Iona vs Holy Cross game in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. For this game, we had never been able to track down full details on much of the box. Notably, we were missing FGA, Rebounds and Assists for most players. The box score looked like this:

We have added a new feature to College Basketball Reference: a comprehensive list of every game-winning buzzer-beater in women's NCAA Tournament history. Details on methodology can be found here. Entering the 2025 Final Four, there have been 47 qualifying shots in the history of the women's tournament, with the last one being Ohio State's Jacy Sheldon in a 2023 Round of 32 game against North Carolina. Thanks to our friends at Retrosheet, Baseball Reference has added Play-by-Play for 2,493 AL/NL and Federal League games from 1913 through 1968. You'll notice no mention of 1969 through 2024, because we already have Play-by-Plays for all of those games (again, thanks to Retrosheet). Via our Play-by-Play coverage map here you can see that we have Play-by-Plays for over 99% of games in every season since 1957, over 95% of games in every season since 1953, and over 75% of games since 1914. The only season since 1912 with less than 75% coverage is 1913 (68.2%). The only other AL/NL seasons under 90% since 1912 are 1944 (75.8%, 1945 (83.4%), 1943 (84.2%), 1946 (87.6%), 1949 (89.2%), 1948 (89.4%) and 1941 (89.7%). Read the rest of this entry

We are thrilled to announce that College Basketball Reference has significantly expanded its coverage of the Women's NCAA Basketball Tournament and now has box scores with player statistics for every game in the history of the event since it began in 1982. We believe this to be the most comprehensive database of women's March Madness information ever compiled for public consumption. Before this update, we had box scores for all of the games from 2003 to present, so this update represents a near doubling of our Women's NCAA Tournament data. Read the rest of this entry

We are pleased to announce that we have added statistics for the full three-season run of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS). WPS, which ran from 2009 to 2011, was a first tier women's league in the United States that featured many of the best players in the world. The three seasons can be accessed from the league page. Additionally, here are the pages for the 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons. Some of the notable players to compete in this competition include Marta, Megan Rapinoe, Abby Wambach, Kristine Lilly, Hope Solo, Veronica Boquete and many others. In addition to season-level statistics, we also have match reports for all games in WPS history. We would like to thank Steve Holroyd for his assistance in compiling this data, which complements the WUSA statistics we added in the fall.

A couple of months back we made a huge update to our Women's College Basketball data, extending coverage of D-I all the way back to the first year of NCAA play in 1981-82. The data generally did not include minutes played, games started, offensive/defensive rebounds, turnovers or personal fouls. Additionally, coverage of blocks and steals was very limited from 1981-82 through 1986-87. Read the rest of this entry
