Early Life
Emily Kinney was born Emily Rebecca Kinney on August 15, 1985, in Wayne, Nebraska. She is the daughter of Jeanne and Vaughn Kinney, and she has an older sister named Beth. The family moved frequently during Emily's youth, and they lived in other parts of Nebraska as well as Oregon and Nevada. Kinney earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 2006. She also spent a semester at New York University. During her college years, Emily appeared in 20 stage productions. After graduating from college, she moved to New York City to pursue an acting career.

After moving to NYC, Kinney worked at coffee shops, where she met people who worked in the music and acting industries. In 2006, she was cast in "Spring Awakening" on Broadway; she was a replacement for the character of Anna and the understudy for the lead female role, Wendla. In 2007, Emily appeared in the short film "Aunt Tigress," then she guest-starred on "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" (2008), "The Unusuals" (2009), and "The Good Wife" (2010). Her first feature film was 2009's "It's Complicated," which starred Meryl Streep, Steve Martin, and Alec Baldwin and grossed $219.1 million at the box office.
