Uzo Aduba was born on February 10, 1981 in Boston, Massachusetts to Igbo Nigerian parents. She was raised in Medfield, where she attended Medfield High School. After graduating in 1999, Aduba went to Boston University to study classical voice; she also competed in track and field there.

Television Career

Aduba first appeared on television in 2012, playing a nurse in an episode of the CBS police procedural drama series "Blue Bloods." She had her breakout role the following year, as Suzanne 'Crazy Eyes' Warren on the Netflix original series "Orange is the New Black." A recurring character on the first season of the show, 'Crazy Eyes' became a main character for the show's remaining six seasons through 2019. "Orange is the New Black" was an enormous hit, earning a surfeit of awards. For her work, Aduba won two Emmy Awards and two SAG Awards. While "Orange is the New Black" was still running, Aduba played Glinda the Good Witch in the 2015 NBC musical special "The Wiz Live!" She also did some voice acting for animated series, playing Bismuth on "Steven Universe" from 2016 to 2019 and Officer Kubritz on "3Below: Tales of Arcadia" from 2018 to 2019.

After the end of "Orange is the New Black," Aduba portrayed US congresswoman Shirley Chisholm in the 2020 Hulu biographical drama miniseries "Mrs. America." For her performance, she won another Emmy Award. Aduba next starred as therapist Dr. Brooke Taylor in the fourth and final season of the HBO series "In Treatment," which aired in 2021. Also that year, she appeared in an episode of the anthology series "Solos." Aduba had her next main role in 2023, playing Edie Flowers in the Netflix miniseries "Painkiller," about the opioid epidemic. Her performance netted her a SAG Award nomination. Around a year-and-a-half later, Aduba began starring as birder and detective Cordelia Cupp on the Netflix series "The Residence." Aduba made her feature film debut in the 2015 film "Pearly Gates," based on a stage musical. That year, she also made a cameo appearance in "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip." Aduba went on to appear in three films in 2016: "Tallulah," "Showing Roots," and the big-screen adaptation of Philip Roth's novel "American Pastoral." In 2017, she voiced Queen Novo in the animated musical "My Little Pony: The Movie." Aduba followed that in 2018 with roles in the Netflix romcom "Candy Jar" and the fantasy film "We Are Boats." Concluding the decade, she starred in "Beats" and "Miss Virginia" and voiced Bismuth in the animated musical "Steven Universe: The Movie."

In 2020, Aduba had a supporting role in the romantic drama "Really Love." She had another supporting role the following year, in the college football drama "National Champions." Aduba went on to voice commanding officer Alisha Hawthorne in the 2022 Pixar animated film "Lightyear," a spinoff of the "Toy Story" series. After taking a break from the big screen in 2023, she was in two films in 2024: the Hulu drama "The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat" and the crime comedy "Greedy People." Aduba began her acting career on stage. In 2003, she gained acclaim for her work in the play "Translations of Xhosa" at the Olney Theatre Center in Maryland. Three years later, Aduba appeared in a production of the musical "The Seven" in New York, and in 2007 she made her Broadway debut in the lauded play "Coram Boy." She subsequently reprised her role from "The Seven" in a 2008 production in San Diego. The following year, Aduba acted in regional productions of "Eclipsed" and "A Civil War Christmas." In 2011, she was a member of the company of the Broadway revival of "Godspell." Over the next five years, Aduba acted in a New York production of the musical "Venice" and a West End production of the play "The Maids." Following a break from the stage, she returned in 2021 to play Clyde in Lynn Nottage's new Broadway play "Clyde's." Aduba's work earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play.
