Early Life

Flume was born Harley Edward Streten on November 5, 1991, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. He is the son of record producer/filmmaker Glen Streten and horticulturist/former teacher Lyndall Streten, and he has two siblings. Flume attended Seaforth Public School, St Augustine's College, and Mosman High School. He started composing music at an early age, and he told Time magazine in 2017, "I was quite young, probably 10 or 11. I was shopping with my dad and there was a cereal that had a promotion on it. It was a CD with a simple music-making program. I thought that sounded cool, so I got him to get it. I installed it, and basically saw music in layers for the first time. I'd always been a big music fan from a young age, but I didn't really understand how it worked. To be able to see inside of it, and see all the different sections, gave me a different perspective on it." In 2010, Flume started producing house music under the name HEDS.

In September 2019, Flume's then-girlfriend Paige Elkington posted an Instagram video of Flume performing a sex act on her during a Burning Man performance. The video went viral despite being quickly removed from Instagram, and though the incident was portrayed negatively in tabloids, it had a positive impact on his career. During a 2020 interview on Elkington's "My Friend Podcast," Flume stated, "I got the opposite of being cancelled." He also spoke about his family's reaction to the viral video, saying that his mother told him, "You know what, honey? I'm just going to stop following the Google alerts. I think I get enough information." Flume has said that public speaking is his "worst nightmare" and that he used to drink alcohol before his performances to help him cope with anxiety. In April 2025, Flume became engaged to American fashion designer Isabella Lalonde.
